Rococo Mirror Frame
Oil and water gilded mirror frame, Rococo style, probably English from the 1760s
All the surface was cleaned with a solution of deionised water, Stoddard and detergent; more stubborn dirt was cleaned with an Ammonia and water solution. Bronze paint covering some areas was removed with Nitromors and wax with hydrocarbon solvents. Fragile areas were consolidated with acrylic adhesive. Calcium carbonate based fillers were used for deep as well as shallow holes. A replica of a leaf ornament was carved in lime wood, gessoed, gilded, distressed and adhered in place of the missing one. An ornament on the opposite side was used as a template.
