Osbern Memorial

Alabaster coat of arms on a marble monument to William Osbern; 1628; original polychromy; Anti Chapel, All Souls College, Oxford

Heavily soiled coat of arms required conservation cleaning. After undertaking pigment analysis, the heavy surface soiling was removed using different dry and wet conservation cleaning methods including a laser system with the wavelength of 1064 nm. Areas of missing polychromy and gilding were partially in-painted and gilded. The newly gilded sections were consequently distressed to make them blend in with the original aged gilded areas. Mareva Conservation successfully reinstated the original colour scheme of the coat of arms while staying true to the age of the monument.
