Elkington Cup

Silver plated and silver gilt cup by Elkington

Condition: Heavily tarnished; dark patches & accretions; corrosion; iridescence; no lacquer layer on the surface; residues of an old cleaning paste in the crevices and hardly accessible areas; scratches, dents & abrasions

Treatment: The surface was first swabbed with hydrocarbon solvent on cotton wool.  The remaining tarnish was removed with a paste of precipitated calcium carbonate and Propan-2-ol on cotton wool.  Then the surface was rinsed with alcohol based solvent.
