Shield 2 - Tomb to R & M Verney

Polychrome alabaster; Tomb to Richard & Margaret Verney (West elevation); 1630; Chapel at Compton Verney

Thorough analysis of surviving of original polychromy was undertaken and all historic pigments were identified prior to conservation treatment. After the completion of analysis, the coats of arms were cleaned. Discussions concerning the level of reinstatement of the polychromy were held as it was important to consider all ethical as well as aesthetical issues associated with this intervention. The colour scheme of the coat of arms was sensitively reinstated to the level which clearly indicates the colours originally used on the shield while making it blend in with the overall aged appearance of the medieval tomb.
