Memorial to B Broughton

Wall tomb monument to Brian Broughton; 1710; marble (different types with grey veining); polychrome alabaster coat of arms; 15th c. ante-chapel

The monument was heavily soiled and required a number of different conservation cleaning techniques to remove the surface soiling. The treatment was undertaken in stages as the monument was heavily soiled and only a gradual cleaning process ensured that the soiling was removed while leaving the original surface intact. A great care was taken on the alabaster section. Upon the completion of the cleaning, polychromy (paint and gilding) was sensitively reinstated and lettering was in-painted. All marble surface received a layer of protective wax coating.
